And we've continued to feel the effects of the terrible decision.

The Electoral College was created to empower slave sates. It empowered former slave states in 1877 and does to this day.

Quid pro quo. And the troops were removed to Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Ohio to put down strikers. The beginning of the direct identification between Republicans and what would become the 1%.

In 1877 a Democratic return to the White House would have been a catastrophe for African Americans, especially since pro-South Dems captured entire Cong in 1878

Any progressives today tempted to denounce Hayes and his questionable election need to recall that the alternative was Tilden who was unabashedly and aggressively pro-South

Hayes repented his overly conciliatory approach to the South and after pro-seg Dems won both Houses in 1878 he fought hard to prevent repeal of Reconstruction legislation

Hayes in the White House was the only thing preventing a total electoral reversal of the Union victory in the Civil War

I am just reading about that election in Chernow's Grant bio. I can't name an American who had greater influence over a longer period than Grant. That he came virtually out of nowhere, was a functional alcoholic and did what he did is a truly amazing story. A very decent man.

There was obvious fraud on the part of the GOP in the election results. Tilden should have been President, but a Democrat would not be elected until Cleveland. #stolenelection
