Its demolition was fully supported by
@REBNY, who is still fighting to this day to demolish more of our city's landmarks, including 270 Park Avenue.pic.twitter.com/7XOfeF5GVe
-
And in the end we got Madison Square garden and Two Penn Plaza, which people LOVE to hate!

The Original Penn Station was an architectural marvel. The present Penn Station is a disgrace to New York.

You’re killing me.

Yeah, I see why they tore it down. The ceiling lets in way too much light. Looks almost .... European. Heh.

Was a joke

even Jackie Kennedy couldn't save it...

She saved
@GrandCentralNYC with the@MASNYC, in a case that went to the@Scotus, and which strengthened@nyclandmarks laws. -
Thank you for correcting me -- too bad Penn couldn't be saved but thank goodness the magnificent GSC is still with us.
-
The silver lining of the black cloud of the demolition of Penn Station--barely 50 years after it was built--was that its destruction led to the creation of
@nyclandmarks and possibly the nation's strongest landmarks preservation commissions & laws. Penn Sta did not die in vain!

Railroad was going bankrupt, they had to sell street level and air rights.
-
Such a shame. The government should have intervened. That building was as iconic and beautiful as the Eiffel Tower. A Nation should not allow National treasures to be destroyed. Can you imagine destroying the Empire State Building to put up a bigger DT Tower?

I was born almost two decades after they knocked it down and I am still angry about it. Makes me mad they demolished this gem.
