There were 2 attempts at impeaching Johnson 17. The Radical Republicans wanted to take control of Reconstruction from the executive branch. They had a 2/3 super-majority which they had already used to override vetoes.

They wanted him out so they simply tried to impeach him and it didn't work. So, they couldn't just impeach a POTUS because they didn't like him. Try something else, set him up. They pass the Tenure of Office Act which said...

A president couldn't fire an appointed office holder without approval from the legislature. So Johnson 17 challenged it by firing Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, a Lincoln appointee. The House believed violating the Tenure of Office Act was and impeachable offense.

In the Senate, Johnson 17 survived the 2/3 super-majority by one vote on each of the 3 (out of the 11) Articles of Impeachment. The remaining 8 never voted on. In 1926, SCOTUS rules the Tenure of Office Act unconstitutional.

After the presidency, Andrew Johnson would be elected to the U.S. Senate taking office on March 4, 1875 and then dying on July 31.

He was also incredibly racist and tried to give back much of what the Union won in the Civil War

Yeah, I think that's consistent with what I said, except that the NYT thought Buchanan was a worse president than A. Johnson, which is debatable.

i feel like its my civic duty as a left leaning moderate to also point out that poll was heavily slanted towards liberals who voted on it. I do agree with the poll but that is also im a liberal the conservatives who voted in it which were far fewer voted differentally.

Perhaps the historians weren't impressed by the Iran-Contra scandal, the Star Wars program, deficit spending, support for Apartheid, or the "Welfare Queen" story.

What’s amazing about Iran-Contra is how Reagan’s WH lawyers were able to manipulate the judicial process to exempt him from being investigated...Millions of dollars of weapons were sold to Iran through Nicaragua, they helped arm Iran and North took the heat....

Yeah, and North got off when they offered him a little too much immunity. I'm sure Mueller knows all about that.
