I was a freshman in high school in '62 & remember how excited & awed we were by "the space race". Looking back it seems like those were the last days of innocence before the assasinations, Vietnam, etc.

What about the colored women who had an instrumental role in the space program and John Glenn's success?

8th grade, b&w TV, I remember it well. John Glenn is one of the most decent humans to ever serve our country. In so many ways.

We need an American hero to rally around again. Is that even possible anymore?

I'll never forget Senator Glenn's visit to my school in Hong Kong back in 1986. He made a very long speech describing this mission and what he went through. An honor to have seen such a hero in person.
