When I see this, and think of the human being who held the Office of the Presidency in 1945, and who holds it today, it makes me want to cry for our country...

Gorgeous portrait but the photo makes it so obvious he was dying - which obviously he did the next day. The portrait is so elegant!
-
Yes, he really looked awful in the weeks before his death. Thankfully that doesn't show in the portrait.

He died at age 63. Truly gave his all for the country.
-
His photo looks older than 63 while the painting took away the grey in his face.

Ms. Shoumatoff was someone who could capture a likeness, unlike today's portrait artists

Read “His Final Battle: The Last Months of Franklin Roosevelt”. By Joseph Lelyveld. He was indeed very ill and he led till the end.

He was so ill--and so exhausted from the travails of the previous 12 years. A large, gifted soul--fitted for his time as so many great men have been.

It was so obvious FDR was dying. Look at him in that photo. I know there was a war going on, but he probably shouldn’t have ran in 1944.

@jeannine3161 I remember that day, April 12, 1945. I was in high school and he was a god in our house from the time I could remember.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

At this point his systolic blood pressure was in the 200s--astronomically high. Ladies and gentlemen, this is what imminent death looks like.
