JFK portrait by Jamie Wyeth, 1967—RFK disliked it because he thought it made his brother look rattled:pic.twitter.com/Y1B7wVM8n9

I’m a Wyeth fan, but I think the Elaine De Kooning portrait of JFK is my favorite in the National Portrait Gallery. It perfectly captures the spirit of the man and the administration.

The Shikler White House portrait that's painted in shadows with his head down is my favourite.

While excellent, I see that the portrait did more to exemplify the nation's wisdom in selecting a man who took far more seriously and accurately the values of his responsibility than his competitor in the national election. Would that that competitor hadn't ever succeeeded.

Good point about Nixon. The only part of Oliver Stone's eponymous film is the moment when Nixon talks to the JFK portrait. It's the poignancy of the Shikler portrait that draws me in - contemplative in that familiar pose with arms crossed. I love it.

@dallaspamela53 Care to give it the once over? I don't think it makes him look rattled, but I wasn't his brother....

Now THAT is a portrait. His brother would know, but to me...it looks more like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders, which I'd expect.

Doesn't look rattled to me either, and I think Wyeth did a great job on the eyes, which portraitists are often unable to do.

I know almost zero about art, and thought it was a Wyeth and was stunning. I dont think I've ever seen it before.
