Mr. Beschloss, did you forget Alan Shepherd?

-
Shepherd just went up and down on his first flight, not into orbit.
-
lol Yes, that's true. "just" up and down. First American in Space.
-
My mom bought a vinyl record album of the entire radio communications from Alan Shepard's flight. 1961. It fit on one 16 RPM record. Released by the Cleveland Press. I think I still have it.
-
omg. priceless.

We gathered around a small, portable, black & white TV in my 3rd grade classroom to watch this amazing event. We weren't sure he would be able to exit the orbit & return to earth. What a day! 2/20/62.

And, today the SpaceX Falcon Heavy makes it's successful flight. I can't get over how amazing it is to see those boosters make their soft landings like that! These achievments, not Trump's feeble crap, are examples of America's real greatness.http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-42969020 …

Also, some people have forgotten that John Glenn didn’t rest on his laurels but went on to a second career as a US Senator, who was re-elected.

I remember this day in 1962 in Eureka, CA. On my lunch hour, I heard a radio report on John Glenn's flight in the basement sales shop at the local Woolwoth's. It was a bright sunny winter day. On emerging, I looked up and sent a good luck wish into the sky.

John Glenn also took a camera he bought at a drugstore with him. He took a picture of the curvature of the earth. The specs show it wasn't a fisheye lens. That's a good way to shut the flat earth goofballs up.
