Super Bowl was named after the Wham-O Super Ball by American Football League’s Lamar Hunt:pic.twitter.com/F1LL8icaI1

My best friend’s dad was the rubber chemist who came up with this stuff. The prototype formulae were incredible, but too expensive for production of a toy. One of the rejected formulas was later used to coat the BART train tracks to reduce noise.

Super balls were the preferred ball of choice for those of us who played jacks in the 60's. Far superior to that hideous red thing that came with the jacks. A bit of trivia to help you pass the time until sportsball starts.

The bounce was more consistent with super balls. Must have been the ZECTRON they were made of. BTW, am I the only person who misses all those wild 1960's sci-fi product names?

Just like the ad, I literally bounced my Super Ball over our house circa 1968. Never saw it again.

I had a Super Ball! They were hard as rocks & only came in black. If you got hit with one you got a goose egg & huge bruise...hit on the head, you're going unconscious.

"The resulting Super Ball has a very high coefficient of restitution and dropped from shoulder level, a Super Ball bounces nearly all the way back up" might make good basketball shoe soles

After inventing Flubber, Fred McMurray ironed the substance to the soles of basket shoes. Hilarious campus hijinx ensues.

I had one of those. I’d throw it against a brick wall and try to snag it when it came back at me. I preserved many a World Series victory that way.

Mr. Hunt was a true gentleman and sportsman. AFL, NASL, pro tennis and MLS all part of his legacy. While his half brothers were trying to corner the silver market, Mr. Hunt was quietly building a sporting empire that will outlive the Hunt name.
