At the time he boasted that it was the most lopsided victory in the Electoral College ever. “I cannot tell a lie...”

That simply can't be true since tRUMP says he had the single greatest electoral college win in history. Plus his hands are huge. He has no contacts with Russia. His inauguration crowd was the biggest, period. Republicans are patriots..hahahaha, sorry, I'll stop.

Washington only received 69 of the 138 electoral votes in 1789. Yes, 50% is the most a single candidate could get before the 12th amendment, but it's not unanimous, nor even enough to guarantee victory. A 50%-50% tie would send the election to the House. https://twitter.com/BeschlossDC/status/959795397672816640 …pic.twitter.com/mNlmgf3820

Each elector cast 2 separate votes, so Washington got all of their first vote. Their second vote was split among other candidates with John Adams receiving the most of these votes and thus coming in 2nd to Washington.

Each elector just got two undifferentiated votes, though. Adams and Jay could have had the most fervent supporters, and everybody just voted for the unobjectionable Washington as their second-favorite. System allowed a bland centrist to win like that.

That was good for 1789. Not so good for 2016. Support Robert Reich proposal to prevent electoral votes from trumping popular votes. And seek now Electoral College revote due to #Russiagate. Dangerous times demand unprecedented solutions. #RescueAmerica
