I remember it so clearly, & the thought was hard to get out of my mind. My Dad, who fought in WWII, said that they were military, and they understood the dangers but they believed in the mission. They were heroes. He said it would be disrespectful to their memories not to go on.

Worker safety poster with Gus Grissom's famous line spoken at the San Diego Convair plant in 1959. Poster was printed and distributed in 1966 when Apollo 1 was being built at North American Aviation.pic.twitter.com/PKyilpHg3E

Sad day. Yet...I was lucky as kid in Indiana to attend Gus Grissom Middle School—with a planetarium in our science wing...inspiring a lot of kids to look to the stars

My dad worked on the Apollo project and knew Ed White. The tragedy is like a silent tombstone in our family history. It devastated everyone on the project.

I lived near Cape Canaveral (now Kennedy) back then and the sadness in the air was palpable... They were the best and brightest, then they were gone... That day, the enormity of the task at hand and its dangers, first struck home...

As a child, I looked up to these men. I dreamed of being an astronaut. My heart still breaks when I see their hopeful faces.

Tears filled my nine year old eyes the day these heroes died. I'll never forget that day...or them.

My uncle RE was a mission scientist. Was an admiral in the USN. Watched it all go down.
