First national tragedy I remember as a kid; I was 5 & I distinctly remember the b&w TV coverage.

My husband was an engineer for Apollo 1 and was part of redesign for Apollo 7–the next one to launch.

I was a teenager when this happened and it was devastating we must have talked about in school for 3 days, it brought into light the danger of being an astronaut which everyone of my friend wanted to be including me.

Those of us who were kids in the 60’s saw much tragedy in our young lives. Assasinations, Vietnam, Civil Unrest, Manson, Zodiac is what we knew. The space program filled my imagination w/excitement & when Gus Grissom, Roger Chaffee, Ed White died, it broke a hopeful little heart.

I remember that all to well. I am related to one of the astronauts who made it to the moon and I was scared to death for him (I was all of 10 years old) - when he finally took off I think the entire family were white knuckled until he landed. So sad.

We all followed the astronauts so closely in those days, it was sad news even for students.

We forget such tragedies at our peril. Three brave men that deserved a better fate.

I’m writing this just a few hundred yards from Island Grissom, one of three man-made islands in Long Beach Harbor named to honor the Apollo 1 astronauts. Rest in peace, gentlemen.

I was 15 and will never forget it. Also sad to think that the Challenger disaster 19 years later happened on almost the same date, 1/28/1986.

Yes, I can relate to folks on this thread. My family were space-age Yankee imports to Huntsville due to my father's work on Apollo. And all my childhood heroes were pilots. Thank you for keeping the time on this timeliness obsessed platform.

I remember being at my grandparents’ house watching TV when they broke the news. I was 9 years old and Gus Grissom’s hometown was about 45 miles away.
