I just thought the same thing. JFK was a speed reader and read several books a month plus newspapers. Plus he consulted people he disagreed with on policy. He had the best and brightest people in his Cabinet regardless of Party. Intelligence mattered

Also significant. Sitting behind JFK and next to Salinger was associate press secretary Andrew Hatcher, the first African American to serve in the WH press office. Mr Hatcher was in many TV shots of the press conferences.
