        At first glance it appeared to me that the seals were a stem of stylized roses; as perhaps they were, metaphorically speaking. The signatures of men who had pledged “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our Sacred Honor”, like seeds buried beneath the snows of Valley Forge, blossom here.

        Looked it up myself. He was sent by the British Government to treat with the united colonies and signed on their behalf. Earlier, Hartley had been the first member of parliament to put the case for abolition before the House of Commons.... 1/2
