Who would want to survive a nuclear war? I personally would want to be in the bullseye of the attack and be gone in an instant.

I just reread Alas Babylon, written in 1959. The naivete about surviving and rebuilding after a nuclear attack is sobering. And yes, I remember hiding under a school desk during drills.

That novel haunts me to this day.

Read it 40 years ago, rereading it made me, I don't know, angry? I thought we didn't have to worry about this anymore.

When this magazine was published I didn’t think I would want to be a survivor, and I was a child. I’ve also had a lifetime anxiety disorder. I’m so sorry for what the people of Hawaii endured yesterday. Horrible terror.

My parents kept a big suitcase with emergency supplies, with a Civil Defense booklet on what happens after an atom bomb attack. Line drawings of people in HazMat suits (before the term was coined) hosing down the sidewalks to make them safe. Think about THAT.

Fairy tales. It ain't going to be pretty folks. Do some research/further reading on your own. Your government is gonna protect its vital functions & ordinary people will be at the short end of the stick. Sad but true.

Michael, I find it funny/odd that no one has brought up the 1984 TV movie “The Day After”. Where miscommunication caused nuclear bombs to hit the US. It was the most watched TV movie in history. I believe 100 million ppl. I was lucky to play Jason Robarts daughter.
