Nixon’s aides give him suggestions to rename Space Shuttle, which, they say, sounds like “second class travel,” yesterday 1972:pic.twitter.com/nUWU2YmVmX

If you want to keep getting funding for it, you'll approach it from the marketing side.

? F marketing, the best way to get funding for it would be to set up a rivalry with an opponent working on a nearly identical program. war it is!!!

"Starlighter featuring Richard Nixon" sounds like the name of a low-budget 70s sci fi TV show.

Space Clipper -- sounds like haircuts in space Pegasus -- horses, even winged ones, are old tech Starlighter -- for lighting your space cigarettes. Glad he stuck to the original.

The Starlighters were Marvin Berry's band that was playing the Enchantment Under the Sea dance at Hill Valley High School on Nov. 12, 1955.

Always wondered how they ended up with a moniker as completely uninspiring as "Space Shuttle". But "Starlighter" is a little silly and "Pegasus" seems random. "Clipper" isn't bad, although the Shuttle was a little too ponderous for that to fit well... hmm! cc @dsfpspacefl1ght

Thx for sharing this! My understanding is that "Space Clipper" had a lot of support, but Nixon rejected all candidates without much discussion. "Starlighter" works if you think of the nautical lighter (= flat-bottomed transport for moving supplies to ships offshore).

Possible that Starlighter sounded too like Starfighter (ie F-104)

In Huntsville, Alabama, we liked "space shuttle" just fine. I remember seeing a "Shuttle Shaker" tee shirt on a fellow who tested the shuttle for vibration damage.
