Poor horses
The good old days, just not for the horses or drivers. That said I've had horses that preferred to stand out in the snow rather than their nice cozy stall.
And the cover of Caleb Carr's "The Alienist" -- hangs on my wall. Stieglitz was amazing.
Ha...I’ve done the same thing. Obviously you have good taste. Cheers
Good eye
I think there are several variations on it, some w/better cropping. I once had Christmas cards of a practically identical shot -- reproduction of photo in collection of, I think, Met Museum.
1) I love these old photos. The main library in Manchester, England has several standing computers set up to learn about the city's history, w/focus on the cotton mills.
wish I had a time machine...
I love these photos. I wish they indicated what street on Fifth Ave. I used to live near the Flatiron Building (one of the others you posted today). The big white building on the R of the photo (Toy Bldg?) was still there when I left in 1997. Don't know if it's still there now.
thank you for all of your photos
The spooky guy in the cape: perfect for The Alienist cover. He's looking right at the camera.
Another comment on Manchester, Elizabeth Gaskell lived there and recorded her shock at the abysmal working conditions in the mills. Her book, and the movie, "North and South," would have been semi autobiographical.
What a great photo. Looks Dickensian.
3) Despite factory workers starving to death, a statue of Lincoln was erected in a nearby square commemorating Lincoln's decision because of the slave labor it involved. Depicted that way, anyhow.
2) The library contained letter from A. Lincoln to the city explaining his responsibility to abide by the laws he was sworn to uphold...keeping the union together, which led him to close southern shipping lanes carrying cotton to the UK.
