This painting is in the Met in NYC. It is worth a trip. Huge -- it takes up an entire wall. Formal structure grabs you. Amazing detail. The other boats in the back are much more apparent. I heard someone say that the painting "fills you up".

I’ve read the unusual icing of the river portrayed in this painting may be attributed to the “Little Ice Age” that affected the northern hemisphere between roughly 1350 and 1850. A convergence of history, science and art.

I'm sorry if this triggers any Trumpkins, or Russian trolls, but the 'stars and stripes' didn't exist until nearly a year after Christmas 1776. The actual flag a victorious General Washington hoisted on New Year's day 1777 looked like ⤵pic.twitter.com/yriFC3Fy9p

Just as an historical note, I grew up near Washington’s Crossing and have never seen the Delaware River choked with such a volume of ice.

Climate of the Middle Atlantic Region then was considerably colder, similar to winters in Quebec. The "hard winter" of 1779-1780 even worse.https://emergingrevolutionarywar.org/2016/01/23/the-hard-winter-of-1779-1780/ …

I grew up in Washington Crossing and the river was filled with ice after the blizzard of 96' froze over. Chunks were hitting Delaware bridge
