1/ In the first decades of the 1700s, ironmonger Samuel Nutt from England created a successful iron foundry. When he died, his wife Anna took the enterprise over: she got the capital from wealthy Philadelphians and hired ironmongers, journeymen and apprentices to do the work.

4/ So they were very pro-Revolutionary. When George Washington needed a site to rest and train his soldiers after the loss at Brandywine, Potts offered a recently vacated little iron town with all that cleared land - a forge in the Great Valley. And that was Valley Forge.
