Sparkman lived in Huntsville, where I grew up, and spoke at my high school. I was very disappointed when I learned his record on civil rights for blacks (he fought against them).

And in those days even a Republican like Ike could pull in at least 30% of the African-American vote -- I think he got 40% in 1956 re-election. Even Nixon had good numbers in 1960 but poor numbers in 1968 with a Southern Strategy.

Might be that Dems fought f/ slavery, sep but =, Fed anti-lynching laws, stood in school hse doors, etc, etc.
