The rockets have long since moved down Independence Ave. Sadly, that wonderful building in the pic has been unused, locked up, for years.

That's how they looked the first time I visited the Smithsonian at five in 1959. Because of my early interest in history and politics, my parents arranged to take me on a trip I've never forgotten.

I saw this as early as '58. Dad worked in R&D, had a security clearance. I only found out later he was working on the space program, which was why he took us there. He had a patent on an antenna on the Atlas boosters. Now I, English major, run a planetarium. What a century!

The rocket on the left, the Jupiter, was designed in Huntsville Alabama at Redstone Arsenal by Wernher von Braun's crew. They also designed the Saturn rocket used for the Moon adventures.

While it was a great way to bring the attention of congress to the space program, the one launch attempt of an Atlas set the building on fire and was never done in the city again.
