Note that while they destroyed the Broad Street Station - small but still an architectural gem - the PRR did try to save some of the artwork, including monumental friezes still tucked in the atrium on the way to the restrooms.
-
(That is, tucked into the 30th Street Station atrium.)
-
There is some nice artwork in the Reading Terminal as well.
-
Different railroad and records archive...Conrail took ownership after RR's bankruptcy, had a separate warehouse facility we looked at periodically as part of this project. RT restoration (a great success, IMHO, tho taking forever) was undertaken earlier than 30th St. project
-
I never knew it as a train station, and was pleasantly surprised to discover the murals one day when I had extra time and was walking around.

I’ve never been to Philadelphia, but would love to visit one day. Is that the station that featured prominently in Unbreakable?
-
It is the one from Unbreakable. Philadelphia is a great place.
-
Thank you. Hope I get to visit it one day!

I worked on the station files for this during the Penn Central Records Recovery Project in 1984-6, under auspices of Hagley Museum/NEH, as an assistant. We had to clamber through old warehouses covered with six inches of coal dust to find the original station files/blueprints.

As a native (suburban) Philadelphian, I have used and loved that beautiful station many times!

Similar renovation going on now with OKC railroad station of same style & vintage.http://www.news9.com/story/37020891/santa-fe-station-re-opens-after-28-million-in-renovations …

Nice! Glad to see these beautiful, irreplaceable old buildings lovingly restored like that.
-
It’s unusual for OKC, where they used to tear down old buildings & put up glass boxes. I love the Art Deco & authentic renovation!

Beautiful! That looks very similar to one we have here that was turned into a museum. Come visit Omaha sometime and I will show you around.pic.twitter.com/NMarL8u34Z

Beautiful! Newer is not necessarily better in the case of architecture.

Beautiful station. Travelled through it twice in recent years and been in awe of the surroundings. Shout out to the redcap service too in Philly - honest, hardworking and funny people!
