More hopeful? You reckon?

I lived in the US at the time, & yes, Gorbachev created an almost unbelievable, hopeful atmosphere.
-
I guess when measuring hope the baseline matters. Communism was still at large at that time.
-
Yes indeed. But from my perspective (my age, at the time) it was dizzying, the thought of the evil empire cracking & collapsing at last.
-
(I was also affected by my 1979 visit to East Berlin + surrounding countryside, where you could cut the chronic, low-level misery with a knife.)

1954 B&W editorial published in Midwest Tribune. America’s first artist to call for
#nuclearban using fine art. Early image evolved into two surreal Skeleton Combatants. USA and NOKO are one misstep away from war. No winners- Mega Death. Studied at the Corcoran in DC 1940s.pic.twitter.com/7bpQGLVVFq

Sorry Michael, I tapped on different or wrong photo. This has my dad at Ellis Island before Twin Towers were knocked down. He was America’s first antinuclear war artist. Editorial drawing published in 1954 calls for abolition of all nuclear weapons. USA and NOKO one misstep war.pic.twitter.com/lqWc8mcVS6

For all those saying these were "happier, hopeful" times, don't forget all the "sky is falling" loons that said Reagan would lead the world to nuke war. How soon they forget.

BS... It was Reagan's tax cuts and deficits that started this country on the road to ruin.

I remember that time. I and those around me felt we could do so much better. What we didn't know was how much worse we could do.

I was there. So much happiness and hope then. Today, despair...
