Penn was in sad shape when it was demolished, filthy and a victim of a hideous interior "remodel." The artists and architects knew what was being lost, the public not so much.

Must have been early 1942 (war was declared in December 1941) - obviously we didn’t expect to be bombed. But I think I remember reading that it took the east coast a while to realize how much they endangered the merchant marine by keeping their lights on.
