Although only 2 days after JFK assassination, NFL chief Pete Rozelle decreed that Sunday games, today 1963, be played—incl. Cleveland Browns vs. Dallas Cowboys, who were announced to crowd only as “the Cowboys”: #Gettypic.twitter.com/F7DfpyDsNd

I've heard Stanley Kubrick dubbed Slim Pickens original line in Dr Strangelove (1964) from “Shoot a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Dallas with all that stuff" to “Shoot a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff”.pic.twitter.com/Tnn9vhimTK

Rozelle would later say that ordering those games to be played was his biggest regret as commissioner

Pete Rozelle said this was his biggest mistake as NFL commissioner. I'm reading a book on the 1963 NFL season now.

I never heard about this dropping of the Dallas name, but it makes sense. Some people were mad at Dallas. After the shooting of Oswald, the Dallas police often were a source of ridicule.

I remember my dad saying there was a very robust singing of the National Anthem by those attending the Detroit Lions game that day.
