Because the Civil War seems so very far removed in time, I always get this little jolt of amazement when I see an actual photograph -- instead of a painting -- of this iconic president. It makes him real in a way no written history can.

One of my favorite parts of the excellent Civil War series is the comment about Lincoln in death - that it was hard to regard him with his eyes closed. Such sadness and wisdom there.
