1. My grandfather John Doyle landed on D-Day as young Army officer. He was proud of fighting Nazis. But he told me about the horror he saw.

2. He told me war displays man at his worst.
-
3. When I was a kid, I loved Star Wars. But he wouldn't see it. He said he'd had enough of war. And didn't want kids to think it was fun.
-
4. After D-Day, my grandfather fought in the Battle of the Bulge, crossed the Rhine at Remagen, and helped liberate a concentration camp.
-
5. Decades later, one of the men he'd rescued recognized him at a retirement community in Florida. He'd never forgotten his face.
-
6. I think my grandfather + so many of those men carried all that with them forever. We should never forget what they really went through.
-
7. So when I tell my kids about D-Day I tell them about what those heroes did. Also about an old man who would not watch Star Wars. And why.

Can't imagine what those brave men felt. My dad-by-marriage escaped Germany as a teen, returned as US soldier in subsequent Normandy wave.

One of the best photos ever taken. The berm ahead looks impenetrable but these guys did it. They broke through the Nazi line, won the war.

Visit Normandy. As you look at thousands of American headstones, ask yourself why you care what Merkel or Euro leaders think. God bless USA
