I lived in Portland when this happened. I remember giant lumps of wet ash on my car and a dark ash filled sky and people in particle masks.

Just a coincidence that you chose Mount St. Helens' eruption to cap this week of major political upheaval, of course. Excellent choice.

The FAA vectored aircraft around MSH for weeks due to poor visibility, engine clogs from ash. Seen from above, the destruction... No words.

I saw it. I breathed the ash. Felt like the Twilight Zone. Babies, dogs, businessmen in suits all wearing masks in downtown Portland.

Highly recommend a visit, it's amazing. The visitor's center is built at the spot where a USGS scientist lost his life during the eruption.

It was awful. Portland was covered in ash. Reporters told us that we would have a high rate of lung cancer in 20 yrs because of the ash

It kept erupting that summer, including for our wedding. Stayed indoors when ash fall was bad. Eldest child is a Mt St Helens baby.
