Or a brilliant marketing ploy to generate increased loyalty and desire for their product

IIRC this was to replace it. They had to scramble to bring back the old formula.

They didn't bring back the old formula. Old one was cane sugar; "classic" was HFCS. "New Coke" actually helped the transition they wanted.

While true, the point was that this ultimately was not how they envisioned it when they made the change.

Even after returning to the old formula, many people insisted "Classic" Coke still tasted like "New" Coke. Took years to live that down.

Oh, what a disaster that was! Coke wanted to taste more like Pepsi and fell flat on their faces! They changed it back about a year later.

Replacing coke messed with people's memories of their childhood they relive when having a coke.

On the way to developing New Coke, they stumbled on the flavor for Diet Coke, so it wasn't all bad.

Coke classic put Coke on top & sold more than anyone could have planned. That couldn't of happened w/out New Coke.
