Did he not butcher it slightly and say I am a doughnut but the audience knew what he was trying to say

The version I heard was he called himself a sub/hero sandwich. Any truth to these stories?

That was a cold cut Carl

@BeschlossDC Strange that no diplomat thought to tell him to say: "Ich bin Berliner". No 'ein'. Try it with 'Frankfurter'. See!@USDOSThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Might have been grammatically incorrect, but still an amazing speech and moment.

My dad was Army MP for 3 yrs in Berlin & told me - seriously - JFK actually said "I am a jelly donut..." Did I get pranked?
-
No, your dad was right. The "ein" isn't used when referring to a person. "Berliner" with the "ein" is a donut.
-
Thanks, Daniel. Dad told that story for YEARS. I wonder if anyone ever mentioned it to JFK? He would have LOL'd

Is it true that the German is grammatically incorrect, & that he said something like "which way to the train station?" Myth?
