    Last time a defeated general election candidate got party's nomination next time was 59 years ago (Stevenson 1956).

        @BeschlossDC You're forgetting that Nixon was defeated in 1960 as a general election candidate before winning in 1968 and 1972.

        @BeschlossDC And I guess, like Romney, he just wasn't aggressive enough to have much of a chance, no matter who the opposing party nominated

        @DavidECohen_ Adlai lost in '52 and '56 because no one stood a chance against Ike. He was a popular war hero.

        @acobasi Ike was great. Only downside was late 50s recession and missile gap. But Adlai I don't think had much to his own merit

        @DavidECohen_ JFK wouldn't have made a difference. He would have got crushed regardless. Joe Kennedy didn't want his son on that ticket.
