RFK-McCarthy California primary TV "debate" was in SF 45 yrs ago today. Q for @greenfield64 How did RFK think he did?pic.twitter.com/OHA49weO0y
@BeschlossDC he thought he did okay...but blew the close because he thought the debate was over and was thinking about dinner!
@greenfield64 RFK had said he'd drop out if he lost California -- what did he expect McCarthy to do if McCarthy lost?
@greenfield64 If RFK had to withdraw after Calif, whom would he have favored--Humphrey or McCarthy, & why? @JohnJHarwood @JoshMankiewicz
@BeschlossDC @JohnJHarwood @JoshMankiewicz He liked Humphrey; thought McC "was not competent to be President." But with the war issue ...?
@greenfield64 @JohnJHarwood @JoshMankiewicz Conceivable that RFK could have moved HHH toward a Vietnam peace plank as price of his support?
@BeschlossDC @JohnJHarwood @JoshMankiewicz (con't) but out of race, compromise more likely. RFK would have had to finesse McC endorsement...
@greenfield64 @JohnJHarwood @JoshMankiewicz Could Ted Kennedy have been nominated at Chicago, had he been willing to accept?
@BeschlossDC @JohnJHarwood @JoshMankiewicz I have no knowledge...I think Mayor Daley post-election implied Ted should have been the nominee.
@greenfield64 @beschlossdc @johnjharwood @joshmankiewicz -sentiment aside, not sure EMK could have won 1968 Dem delegates.
@nprscottsimon @greenfield64 @johnjharwood @joshmankiewicz I agree--EMK was against the war, which would have activated LBJ against him.
