. @BeschlossDC last week of RFK's life. today they'd be sparring, with less civility, over Super PAC attack spots rather than newspaper ads

@JohnJHarwood And you can imagine how ugly & scurrilous those attack spots might be.

.@BeschlossDC though, given McCarthy's tastes, perhaps his attacks would be laced w/dry humor. how would you have responded @greenfield64 ?

@JohnJHarwood @BeschlossDC Our goal was to come out of CA united behind one peace candidate. So response would not have been tough on McC.

@greenfield64 @JohnJHarwood Jeff, how optimistic were you that McCarthy would pull out after California if he lost there?

@BeschlossDC @JohnJHarwood Not very.Margin in CA was only 46-42. But some of his backers (Sam Brown) were going to jump.

@greenfield64 @JohnJHarwood Methinks you might have had a long summer trying to wear down McCarthy's excuses for staying in the race.

@ChrisConnelly Dalai Lama doesn't have the expansive view of his place in the cosmos that Gene may have had of his own by that point in '68.

@BeschlossDC That is a true story. Gene might've gone at RFK all the way to Chicago like his most donnish instructor at Portsmouth Priory.

@ChrisConnelly As long as he lived, McCarthy never got over his bitterness at RFK for coming into the 1968 race.
