Did he coin the name “Fido” because otherwise I’m kind of disappointed by his lack of originality, tbh

But remember, that was over 160 yrs ago. It likely wasn’t such a hackneyed name back then. Fido is from the word fidelity, perfect name for a loyal dog. The meaning may have been more esoteric at the time. Lincoln was a well read mostly self educated man.

When I was 6YO I had a German Shepherd named Major -- who got banished to a farm when he bit the ice cream man. (We were jumping up & down in anticipation.) This whole thing makes me very sad.
