In the 90's they surgically removed my father's lung, trying to curb the spread of the cancer caused by decades of cigarette smoking. My mother picked a blue/silver casket because that was his favorite color. So, no, I would not say he thanked the day he bought his first carton.

My dad was able to kick the habit being on a nicotine patch trial at Stanford at the same time, yet he still died an agonizing death tethered to O2 for his last few years. A death I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

I remember when cigarette cartons came at holiday time decorated with printed ribbons and bows. Just in time for that last minute gift for mom or dad!

Nearly 50% of adult American men were smokers in the 1950s, including many of the first seven Mercury astronauts. The subject even came up at their first press conference in 1959.pic.twitter.com/ypFT1RpICc

It wasn't until I left home that I realized that the glaze on the turkey wasn't supposed to be, necessarily, nicotine deposits. (If you've been raised by a smoker, you know that these are real things.)

Why not? The military handed out free coffin nails and got the young soldiers hooked. The tobacco industry never had any shame.

Before the Surgeon General labeled boxes in 1965 and tv ads banned in 1970, ads like this were the norm. Everyone and their mother smoked everywhere, including airplanes. And most actors did in movies. We've come a long way.
