Such deep respect for our beloved American artist #NormanRockwell. His use of consistent color base and facial expressions in all of his prints tell an entire story without one word typed in the #SaturdayEveningPost.

I wonder of the police officer is thinking about time he spent in France a generation earlier.
-
Very possible.

The more you look at it, the more you see. "Joe," the garageman hero pictured here is about the same age as my dad was in 1945. But he didn't tell us stories about what things were like in the South Pacific. Norman Rockwell was so wonderful. Thank you for sharing this.

All Americans should visit the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA. I was always so indifferent to him and his work, but then one afternoon there last month changed everything.

In the back of the garage, there's a page of a newspaper that looks like the returning Marine's face and a heading that says Hero Is he telling them the 1st hand account?
-
Looking at his ribbons he is: Silver Star, Purple Heart, and Presidential Unit Citation. Silver Stars were very hard to get especially if one was an enlisted marine.
-
@mccrackin592 why is that?? Quickly read a article that said the Silver Star was disproportionately awarded to officers in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Is it bc Marines are usually " First to Fight " so a Marine is expected to act pretty damn valiantly already? -
There was a study done in the Navy about 1946 about disproportionate award of medals to officers. Shameful conclusion: hard for enlisted "to stand out." Marines have always been stingy with decorations. Often they get 1 medal below what they were recommended for.

Also, a common 1950's & 1960's scenario for American children ,of all backgrounds. A WWII Navy Vet Uncle's story saved my life ,caught in a Cerromar PR ripper in the 1980's,I recalled his war experience advise "how to swim out of a rip-tide" by heading diagonally to shore.
-
WW2 vets had all sorts of amazing ‘worst case scenario’ advice. Escape from FUBAR. Lol.
-

Seeing you beach hotel getting further away -triggers the FUBAR alert. Fortunately I was a decent swimmer- with a good memory. I wasn't afraid at the time -but a few years ago I googled that location for added perspective - my shore options were the hotel beach or Senegal
