I jumped the gun, sir. I've been not celebrating Woodrow Wilson for decades, now. 😁

I agree with all of this, and I would add: His 14 Points were betrayed by the Versailles Treaty, which led to the bitterness of Germany and the creation of many small nations with no chance of defending themselves. It's very arguable that Wilson caused WW II.

Republican congress made it a point to oppose whatever treaty Wilson came back with. That was the plan before he even went over there. The agreement was conceived with the intention of the U.S. being involved in the process. Would things have looked different if we had been?

Wilson did not take a single Republican with him to Paris. Had he done so, he might have created a plan with bipartisan support. Worth a shot, anyway. As it was, Wilson owned it.

True, Bipartisan representation should always be the goal but rarely is. But many factors led to WWII, not just one act or person. As an example, TR made secret treaties with Japan that encouraged imperialism. We know how that turned out.

You're right, and that's why I said "arguable" -- worth discussing seriously, but that's all. My guide in this is https://www.amazon.com/Diplomacy-Touchstone-Book-Henry-Kissinger/dp/0671510991/ …, which shows how Europeans had a rich tradition of diplomacy (not perfect, obviously!) which Wilson prevented from functioning.

Every political 'error' after WW1 stems from Helmuth von Moltke the Younger fatal mistake believing Germany could defeat the French army in 6 weeks. It didn't and he told the idiot Kaiser Wilhelm even before the end of 1914 they'd lost the war. Why? Reliance on horses & cartspic.twitter.com/WLH1DEUUrs

I love you, Mr. B. - but aren't you being a little unfair to Wilson? Discounting foreign policy issues, his affect on the nation's domestic politics, reform of elections, Federal reserve, etc., was profound. Indeed, he was elected in '12 in part by co-opting TR's reform plans!

Excellent column. Thank you for helping to clarify the fallacies that have been perpetuated for years about Wilson. Many historians have been blinded by Wilson's dream of the League of Nations while ignoring his numerous weaknesses. You set the record straight.
