Sen. Everett Dirksen, in the light brown suit next to RFK, was the Republican leader in the Senate. Dirksen worked with northern Democrats to end the filibuster by southern Democrats and secure passage of a civil rights bill. The Republican Party has changed a lot since then.

JFK announced the civil rights bill in an Oval Office address to the nation in June 1963. RFK was certainly a part of that decision but I would not say he was the driving force.

Believe I read that RFK collaborated with both JFK and Johnson, as Attorney General, o formulate the Civil Rights Bill that eliminated Jim Crowe. I dare to say he was a driving force behind it. Matthews book "Bobby" covered some of the atrocities he witnessed leading to it

And how do we know today's Rs are wrong when they say only the Ds were racist? There's not one example of any R official back then standing up and saying racist Ds were not welcome in the R party. And Rs wasted no time getting their "southern strategy" in high gear.
