Walt Whitman provided one of the best assessments of Grant -- he "often seemed about to be defeated when he was in fact on the eve of a tremendous victory."pic.twitter.com/U9D7mAR1IO

And not the drunken butcher he's made out to be. He drank when he was bored, never in combat only during the long downtimes, when he had too much time to think. Lee killed more Americans than Hitler or Ho Chi Minh.
-
Wasn't it his drinking that caused him to be caught off guard and nearly defeated at Shiloh? Just saying. Overall he was an honorable leader no doubt

Obviously you're a student of history and as such realize many factors play into a major historical event such as the Battle of Shiloh. It involved terrible judgement on the parts of Grant and Sherman, and they learned terrible lessons.

Also if you have a chance visit the US Grant home in Galena, IL. Fascinating place. His family lived very humbly compared to other presidents.

Ron Chernow’s biography of Grant brings great insight to this great general, abolitionist, advocate for civil rights and always moral man who understood his imperfections and was humbled by them.

A long forgotten General, who stayed loyal to his country, is George H. Thomas. My favorite, over Grant and Sherman.

The “ROCK OF CHIKAMAUGA” steadfast, deliberate and as loya to those under his command as they were to home. A truly great United States General!!!
-
Practically the only reason the entire Federal Army didn't get completely destroyed at Chickamauga. My 3X great grandfather was under his command in the 14th Corps, 121st Ohio.
-
Absolutely! That is awesome, to have direct lineage to a freedom fighter and protector of the union must be awesome!
-
I would absolutely love to know more about him and his regiment. Definitely going to do some digging. Also have a direct connection through my 5x great grandfather to the Revolution.
