I’m packing up my mom’s house and made a timely find yesterday. My Dad was stationed in Hawaii during the war, and he saved the front page of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin for Sept. 3. Doesn’t s picture, but has text of the surrender on page two /1
and of Macarthur’s addresses. Front page has pictures of the parade in Honolulu on the 3rd. Headline: 135,000 See Victory Parade; subhead: Scores of Planes in Thrilling Air Show.
The evacuated Gen. Wainwright behind him is powerful
My grandpa, after being stationed in the Philippines for over a year, was on a ship headed toward Japan when this happened. I can’t imagine their relief when they found out they were heading home instead!pic.twitter.com/v2p7MXfQDP
My step-father was there. He was a doctor and had served at a base in China during the war. Yes, we had armed forces in southern China during WWII. He was the base doctor. He was on board the ship for the signing.
In '45. OK I see what you did there. 45 should 'surrender' Trump should RESIGN
The makeshift desk was manufactured by Steelcase. I’ve stood on the very spot ... pretty awesome!
IOWA, because of its close association with FDR original choice for surrender vessel and latest radio equip was installed to broadcast the surrender, until President Truman noticed MISSOURI was there.
Was there any significance to the fact that the MISSOURI was chosen for this event? With Missouri being Harry Truman's home state? Or was it just serendipity?
Do we close wars anymore?
Thank you for sharing these important historical moments with us.
I thought it was interesting when my family visited the USS Missouri and Pearl Harbor Memorial that both represented our country’s entrance and exit to WWII.
Pearl Harbor and the US cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach are both very humbling.
Carol and I are looking forward to a trip to Washington DC later this month.
Attended MacArthur Elementary school in the Phillipines while my dad was stationed there. I don’t remember a lot of that school, except we talked about him a lot & had a song I believe (this was 1982-ish).
