I was a teenager when Barry ran for President, and even back then I could see he was way out of main stream America and too right wing. Now I compare Trump to Goldwater, and Goldwater is 100 times more honorable and reasonable than Trump will ever be.

I;m pretty sure Goldwater would have hated today's GOP
-
“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem."
-
The very quote I was thinking of. Nice!

We had no clue what extreme right was at the time. LBJ was every bit the warmonger of as opponent, and had already been in bed with Earl Haliburton's daughter. Yes, the same Haliburton of Iraq Cheney secret contract, etc.
-
OMFG that LBJ sure was a busy horndog! He really got around.

Probably easier to ask who he didn’t sleep with!
Poor Lady Bird. -
she was a saint, IMO, the saving grace of his presidency.

"In your guts, you know he's nuts." (Now, why can I remember this decades old joke and can't remember to pick up the dry cleaning?)
-
Short term memory goes first.
-
Yes. I'd forgotten that.
-
I vaguely remember the Goldwater nonsense. I do remember the countdown ad. Where did I put my keys?
-
The link was impossible to read. As a New Yorker subscriber, I probably read the article though. Are we arguing about age and short term memory failure? If we are, I will grant you that people age differently.
-
No argument at all. I just wanted to share this very funny Steve Martin article. Yes, now as I click through the whole thing, I see that it is impossible to read. I made seversl photocopies to include birthday cards but I was never able to find them.
-
If it was a Steve Martin article in "New Yorker" in 1998, I'm sure I enjoyed it. When you're reading 25,000 pages a month retention becomes a issue.
