        While others believe that the fall of the Berlin Wall was the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union, it may have been the "Prague Spring" that signaled the beginning of the beginning of the end.

        I met Lech Walesa's cousin, Walter Brolewicz, some years ago. He wrote a book about his cousin. Not so much a biography, but a reminiscence of the milieu of the time. If the Prague Spring opened a crack in the Soviet Union, Solidarity & Pope John Paul II forced the door open.

        I remember quite vividly my parents reaction to this invasion. They were gravely concerned and appalled at the show of force and brazen attack on the citizens. No connection whatsoever to Czechoslavakia, just 2 citizens of the world.

        Dad was RCAF, stationed in west Germany at the time. As dependants, DND advised we were on standby for short notice evacuation convoy to Switzerland. Interesting times.
