My one true baseball hero. I was 15 when he died and cried like a baby when my mom woke me up to tell me the news. For days I expected him to be found on some desert island. I mean, how can Superman die? One of the greatest players, but an even greater man.

I wrote to him when I was 12 and he sent me an autographed PICTURE, not a photo. It is hidden away in a very safe location. I, too, cried for days after finding out he died. Heroes are rare. He was my hero. I miss him.

After 120 years under US Flag the American citizens in Puerto Rico continues under a segregated political status. The people voted to incorporate PR as the 51st state and US Congress keep segregation and denial of voting rights in PR.pic.twitter.com/IlBHAWrozB

He was my favorite player when I was a kid. A selfless human. Beloved by his team mates. When the news came on saying he'd died in a plane crashed, I was devastated. For me, he'll always be one of the GOATs.

And could probably still gun down a baserunner trying to go from first to third on him. A great humanitarian, and one of the best ever. Almost single-handedly beat my Orioles in '71.

I still vividly remember the day his cargo plane went down carrying relief supplies for victims of the earthquake in Managua. A good man and brilliant baseball player. It seems impossible that he has been gone 46 years.

A great humanitarian who gave his life in the service of those who are less fortunate. He will never be forgotten.

The only time I saw my tough old racist grandfather cry was when "that beautiful Roberto" died.

Thank you for reminding me! Growing up in Pittsburgh I had the privilege of watching him both at Forbes Field & Three Rivers Stadium. As a kid I probably got his autograph 4 or 5 times & he was always a gentleman & so giving of his time. Truly "The Great One" in sports & life #21

Bleacher report lists the top 25 arms in the outfield. Mays, Mantle, Cobb, Ichiro, Kaline, Guerrero... Best outfield arm of all time? Roberto Clemente. And "Clemente is tied with Willie Mays for the the most Gold Gloves for an outfielder with 12." Amazing player!

I'm from Pgh. I watched him play. He also was a great human being.

He didn’t seek attention for humanitarianism either. He was such a soft spoken humble athlete and hero for many. I was a young girl when his plane went down in 72. I remember even my Grandfather wiping his eyes.

A piece of us was lost that day. I was a young girl too when it happened. Both my parents cried.

The smoothest baseball player I've ever seen. One of the first to be socially conscious.
