I've read he was a Jeffersonian Republican which is WAY removed from today's GOP. Is that true, and what would it mean?

It's complicated. Lincoln was a life-long Whig - which stood more for manufacturing, commerce and infrastructure improvements than the agrarian Jeffersonians. Lincoln's certainly supported Jeffersonian concepts of greater equality for the common man, though...

We went through a few parties on the way to 1860. Lincoln ran as a Republican, part of a new coalition of former Whigs, free soil farmers (who wanted the territories free), new industry, & anti-slavery advocates. The Democratic Party split in half, & there was another party too.

The other was the Constitutional - Union Paryy, composed largely of former Whigs who could not face up to the nation cracking up over the slavery issue, and whose answer on anything was to say "I stand for the Constitution." Their nominee was an ex-Whig, John Bell...

Here’s an interesting thought. One of our worst presidents, Buchanan, was replaced by Lincoln.

Yes, four of the worst preceded him, and then one of the worst succeeded him and we still survived. That’s why he was our greatest president.

Lincoln had chosen a cabinet made up of a number of men who didn't like him, & he made it work. trump can't get along with people he chose.

There are some people who think he had a connective tissue disorder called Marian’s system, b/c of his build. It would have left him with a weak heart, and would explain the weariness (as FDR aged quicker because of polio). But it’s just a theory - there is no way to know.

We need a Lincoln for the 21st Century, not a game show host who has no respect for the nation, our Constitution, nor the tapestry of people who made this nation great. Other leaders have made bad decisions in our name, but no one doubted their love for this country. Until now.
