I was born in August, 1946, so my parents lived through the war, and closely followed the news. They thought using the A-bombs, at least the first one, was the right thing to do, but never seemed to care about removing the emperor, either way.

"Full and unconditional surrender" was us policy. Japan had likely been trying to surrender for a while. Racing the enemy is a good book on the topic
