1/ Most people truly did not understand how different this bomb was - they just thought it was a great big bomb. They had already firebombed cities, something my uncle found horrific, as he wrote my Mom, shortly before his death the bomber plane he piloted went down.

2/ I can understand Hiroshima, but there was no reason for Nagasaki except to field test a different version and impress the Russians in the process. But yes, I pray no version of a nuclear weapon is ever used again. I wish we could forget how to make them.

I hope the world will never see that sort of weapon used again. Also: I'm going with, one week. One week before trump begins routinely using the word "foe" & the phrase "rain of fire" in his tweets and/or off-the-cuff remarks.

I think people forget that the human cost of an invasion of Japan would have been greater than that of the destruction the two bombs. Also, if it hadn't been used then there is a good chance it would have been used eventually and the toll might have been greater

Great decision to drop both bombs. Japan would not have surrendered after only one. US casualties would have been immense with an invasion and Japanese casualties would have been even higher. Also served as a reminder of why such bombs should never be used again.

One of the reasons that I’m here. My dad was on a PT boat in the Philippines and would have been part of any invasion. I’ve heard estimated US casualties in the first wave were 1 million dead. No idea if that number is accurate though.

[New age ushered. That’s fit to print. Three cents.] In 2018 this is just another Tuesday and not even today’s biggest news.

Sadly, this action was popular with a lot of Americans who demonized the Other. Have we evolved past this idea? Sad to see Trump keep up his rants against Mexicans, immigrants and other boogeymen
