The claim to fame about this photo is that Collins was the only person, living or dead, not in this photograph.

Awesome fact.
-
Collins' perspective on the moonshot, as the guy manning the mother ship, is unique and fascinating. Anyone interested in him should watch "In The Shadow Of The Moon", a remarkable documentary to which he makes a crucial contribution.
-
His memoir, “Carrying the Fire,” is extraordinary.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Every single human being who had ever lived throughout all of human history or who was alive on July 20, 1969 is in that photo. Except one person, Collins. (Not my original thought....)

Thanks for posting this. I was 11 years old in 1969 and completely fascinated by space. I remember waking up early to see the splashdowns and always be relieved when the capsule opened and they came out.

It's so sad and pathetic that humanity has lost this ability over the past 49 years. No one in my lifetime has set foot on the Moon.
-
But we did send a rover to Mars for some pretty spiffy footage!! At least I thought so.
-
Several. In my lifetime starting with Sojourner in the mid 90s. Curiosity being the latest.

Thanks for posting all of the 7/20/69 stuff,
@BeschlossDC - it’s important to remember that we were once a great country. I believe we will be again, but it’s going to take some time. ##Midterms2018Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I bought my grandson a rocket with an astronaut who we named Buzz Aldrin. I’m teaching him about space cuz I’m a gramma and I have time.

It is amazing to me, as an IT geek, that they GOT TO THE MOON and GOT BACK using 1960s technology. It shows what can be done by America's best and brightest when the country commits to achieving a goal.

That held the imagination of the world when it happened. We held our breaths as one.

The contrast of the moon’s surface against the absolute blackness of space is both stark and visually stunning.
