How in hell did we go from the Mercury program to the moon in basically a decade? Unbelievable. Yes, I’ve read Tom Wolfe’s brilliant book, but it is amazing nevertheless. When did we quit believing we could do this?

Buzz Aldren went to my high school. I knew people who were his friends and I got to meet him once. Yes, we went to the moon.

Ok. Do you think we'll be able to return to the moon soon? I know we can get much better photos with the technology we have now.

If we wanted to. There are a lot of things I’d like to do, but I’d rather return to a new goal in space (no space army), where the discoveries needed to go the next step get used in unexpected ways, than spend so much money on war.

Love the guy in the second row smoking a cigarette like Conrad Veidt. Must be a German rocket scientist.

Nope. The guy with dark glasses and the cigarette is an American, Dr. Edward Cristy Welsh, secretary of the National Space Council. But Kurt Debus, on JFK's right was a former Nazi and member of the SS. (Yes, those are dueling scars on his face.)

And Paul Nitze with ever-present pipe in the back row. Von Braun (also in dark glasses) is out of focus behind Welsh. (They are all listening to Rocco Petrone, by the way.)

Yes, I am reposing my tweets here over and over. I am not clear why moon voyage earned so many tweets? And as T. Leherer indicated, astronomical amount of $ was put into space, all while so many serious issues did not get this type of $. $ ==> importance?https://twitter.com/NaomiH_nothing/status/1020296304696614913 …

Not a single $ was spent in space. It was all spent on Earth. I'm a fan of Tom Lehrer, and his song about von Braun is hilarious. But you've got a very narrow view of history if you think all that Apollo accomplished was putting "some clown on the moon."

TU! I (EL(D)) know $ was spent on earth..For space missions. My bad, and sorry. Considering accomplishments, isn't it also about priorities? Other serious issues faced by the US at the time? Time spent by all? Bottom to JFK, and back? Message to all as to the US' priorities?pic.twitter.com/4bniBsw1Ru
