I had watched Apollo 11 take off from Cape Kennedy.

I watched this with a man who had, as a child, seen the Wright bros. He sat enthralled, tears streaming down his cheeks. Unforgettable.

1969 — Family summer trip. We were in Corvallis, Oregon. Many people huddled around a scratchy TV set in the OSU Student Union.

-
Earthrise, Apollo 8, the most important photo ever taken.
-
This particular one is from Apollo 11 (NASA ID#AS11-44-6564). But the Apollo 8 image is indeed historic.
-
Ah, I was hoodwinked! Did you see the one from China? Fifty years later and it's black and white and blurry.
-
I'm not sure which one you mean but the Apollo images were captured on medium-format film with Hasselblad cameras, which explains their beautiful quality.
-
I meant the one from China's space agency from last year was so inferior to what we did decades ago. The pictures we take from space are so beautiful!
-
Do you mean from Chang'e 3? Those digital images were actually pretty nice. http://spaceflight101.com/change/change-3-mission-gallery/ …pic.twitter.com/19vvKtpnoJ

Apollo 11 was set to land on moon on on my 13th bday - July 21. My Dad told me for weeks before "July 21 will be in history books forever." I was SO EXCITED. The mission ended up ahead of schedule. Actually landed 2 hrs early on July 20. Heartbroken 13yr old... But still proud!
-
Exact same story with my sister! She did get a rocket on her cake though.
-
Oh geez - I feel her pain. Did your family stay up & watch the landing? It was really late, from 11pm-ish til about 2 am. I'm oldest of 6 kids & only me & my parents were awake. Super cute that your Mom added a rocket to the cake. Happy B-day to your sister!
-
Oh yeah we stayed up! Happy Bday to your sister too!
