I was 11 years old, and I remember my 5th grade teacher in Tacoma, Washington, turned on one of Fern Hill Elementary School's black and white televisions that was in our classroom so we could look up at it every so often while we did silent reading or math. I was mesmerized!

I had just turned ten. An event (& the entire space program) that has stuck with me and shaped my belief of what it means to be an American and pride in what we accomplished.
-
That was an amazing time to be a kid, that's for sure. Even though there was a lot social unrest going on, I never felt like we were on the brink of being overrun by another country. I felt safe, even though the Vietnam War was in full swing. Kind of strange, looking back now.

Those were strange times. I absorbed it all like a sponge. Big imprint on who I am.

Same here. Most definitely.

I watched every launch
when I was growing up. Loved it. Couldn’t get enough.
Fast forward: July 20, 1969, I’m walking firewatch at Parris Island they are landing.
We didn’t have TVs. USMC BOOT CAMP. But. The Drill Instructors did in their office.
Great

So, they had their door open a bit, they’re just landing, I ask, “Sir, do you mind if I take a look?” “You can see it in the paper in the morning.” *The only time we ever saw the paper was in the paper rack at the chow hall. Saw the picture on the front page.

Reminds me of being able to catch a piece of Charles and Diane's wedding at boot camp at Great Lakes because I was making coffee for the company commanders

America landed people on the moon nearly 50 years ago, but it still hasn’t learned how to value something as basic as truth.

Nostalgia for normal. I remember my mom sitting lil' sis
@sueinnm and I down in front of the TV and telling us we were watching history in the making. She was right. - 1 more reply

It would have been nice to have this in multiple languages in case English ever goes by the wayside. Rosetta Stone.

I took a photo off our tv of Armstrong stepping down. Wish I hadn't lost it in one of my many moves. For awhile, space trips seemed so fantastical.
