Sorry that the anniversary slipped by without notice ... I was too busy having a meltdown, watching a president* sell out this country.

Startled to note that the rocket launch towers were demolished on July 12, just five days ago, to make way for private use by Moon Express. Were there ever an ultimate candidate for NHL nomination, these towers would be it. What happened, Michael @BeschlossDC ? Why not preserved?

The pads that were destroyed weren't used to launch Apollo - it flew from 39a,b,c https://spaceflightnow.com/2018/07/12/launch-complex-17-demolition/ …

Thank you, @whenpigsflyyy . Wikipedia was somewhat misleading on this. Are those pads still extant, then? And are they recognized?

The pads were used for Shuttle launches. They're now being "refurbished" to be used to support Space Launch System rockets.

When did it stop being Cape Kennedy, and why was it changed?

1973. Residents of Cape Canaveral (town) objected to the name "Kennedy." Sen. Ted Kennedy said in 1970 that it would be decided by the citizens of Florida. The Kennedy family issued a letter stating they "understood the decision." Kennedy Space Center retains the "Kennedy" name.
